This is actually a copy of a MGM VHS version that was released in the mid 1980s, I can tell because of the same bad piano music. This is a shame because I did see a Library of Congress version at the Silent Movie Theater in Los Angeles in the 1990s so I know a excellent copy does exist.

Subject: Wonderful, possibly the best!
I love "The Cameraman" very much, this funny, sweet and very diverse film. it is the second silent film and the first Buster film I saw in my life. I honestly didn't know what to expect from it, but it turned out unbelievably great. It made me fall in love with Buster, and I've been a fan ever since! It literally rocked my world and made me fascinated with silent comedies, and the twenties culture in general.

The film is different from earlier Buster features (it was produced under the whole different circumstances, if you know what I mean). I think the main difference is that it is both hilarious AND rather melodramatic and touching. You truly sympathize with Buster like never before. The plot is clever, and there are many different locations and situations in which the protagonist finds himself. (The city plunge scenes and the battle in Chinatown are the best, in my opinion). Buster's love interest here, Marceline Day, is very beautiful and sweet. The rival is played by the same actor you saw in "College". Another merit of the film is that you can see the 1920s NY and LA locations - I find it fascinating.
Different music scores exist for this film. I personally prefer the other one, with cool organ and melodramatic piano passages played in the sad scenes. The picture quality is pretty low here - very blurry, at least in comparison with the DVD version I saw.

Subject: Well worth the wait
Thi is the Keaton film, I've been waiting for ages to see. I'm hesitatingly putting it into my favourite Keaton Movies alongside "The General"
"Sherlock Jr" "The three ages" and "Steamboat Bill jr" I say "hesitatingly" because the comedy does slacken in the latter half. But there is plently of funny stuff, my favourite bit probably being Buster's first entrance into the swimming pool.
Yes, the print wasn't great. but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the movie.

Subject: Great film, bad copy:
Ah, a lovely film. If you're getting this, you know the comedy masterpiece it is.

The actual archive.org file:
Well, it's a MGM-edition 67 minute print, in okay shape. I think it's the definitive copy. Alas, it looks to come off analog video, as there's fringing and color issues at the edges. Also, the video is MPEG 1 not MPEG 4. Yes, 352x240 instead of DVD-type 720x480. That's VHS-equiv resolution. MPEG 1 also leaves lots of artifacts in motion scenes. The encode is bad, too, and jerks or drops frames. Be warned; this isn't quite a substitute for the real DVD.

I knock it down a star because it is better than Youtube quality, but still heavily artifacted.

Subject: My Favorite Buster Keaton Film
This is such a sweet film. Though not filled with his most spectacular stunts, it nevertheless contains some good falls, and the scene with the camera in the tickertape is hilarious. And his fall when he's walking with Sally is perfect. The soundtrack is also very good, and the print is good enough. Someday, let us hope, these films will be fully restored.

Anyway, I love this film, and it's absolutely wonderful. It would be a good date film, if you're into that kind of thing.
